VED tax - budget changes

Post by matt_bakermk1 »

hey all,

looks highly likely that wednesdays budget will add a new catagory to VED (road fund licence) for vehicles that produce over 250g/km CO2. This would likely be a £200 tax cost. Note, it may also be over 225g/km not 250g/km...

Anyone remember what the MR2 emissions are offiocially - i.e. will we be over 225-250g/km?

It's pitched as a tax for SUV or 4x4 owners, but in fact only 29% of SUV produce over 250g/km. It's more likely that high performance car and larger MPV owners will be stung the most. As examples, all the following are effected:

Vauxhall Vectra 3.2i V6 24v 5 dr hatch automatic petrol: 252 g/km
Volkswagen Golf R32 V6 4motion manual petrol: 259 g/km
Ford Galaxy 2.8i CD-V6 24v manual petrol: 259 g/km
Renault Espace 3.5V6 24v automatic petrol: 292 g/km
Toyota Previa 2.4 vvt-i automatic petrol: 259 g/km
Volkswagen Sharan 2.0 automatic petrol: 264 g/km
Volvo S80 T6 executive automatic: 268 g/km
Chrysler PT Cruiser 2.4 hatch automatic: 251 g/km

I've had a quick look around and can't really find any reliable figures (will check manual later at home), but I have found the following.

Mk III 178g/km
Mk II GT 96> 216g/km

Not sure how accurate the Mk II figure is, everything is either not available or vague about cars pre 2001.

Hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge can give accepted figures, unless its on your Vehicle Log from DVLA.

Sorry if showing complete ignorance here, but will it not also depend on the condition of the engine, how well its been maintained etc?

I assuem thatthe figures increase as thevehicle gets older as it is usually less efficient?

I don't think they can apply this to vehicles older than (?)2001 when the current CO2 regs were introduced - mainly because there won't be any information for all the older cars. That's why there's currently a reduction for older vehicles under 1500cc. If they bring in a higher band for old vehicles it will have to be capacity based - whether forced induction will make any difference is anyones guess.

all road tax costs are based on your emissions level aren't they though... or for older cars is it just on engine size? I'm all vague now, just know that at present I pay the highest tax bracket and wondered if this is gonna ramp up to yet another new highest bracket!

Will check out DoT and see what they say...

ok, so it's actually pretty simple:

Cars registered before 1st Mar 2001 split by engine size:
1. Not Over 1549cc = £110
2. Over 1549cc = £170

Then the new graduated VED charges apply based on emissions, but will only impact on the roadsters...

MR2 Mk3, 1.8 VVT-I Manual 1794cc, 178g/km = Band E £150.00

So unless the new budget also impacts on the pre graduated listed vehicles, looks like we might all be ok for no RFL increases!

I read somewhere its not going to be retrospective, so we should be ok.

While that is the logical way to look at such things, the tax band your car sits in depends on the figure shown on your log book and as far as I'm aware DVLA reference the official figure when the car was produced and don't make any adjustment due to age.

I'm in the camp hoping that it doesn't rise to £200 today, as mine is due at the end of April...

DAMN - jury's out. We go up £5 for pre 2001 cars in the higher band (i.e. bigger engines over 1549cc). So that will be £175 of HRH finest now not the £170 previously.

and for new cars:
Band A - now free
Band B - reduced by £35
Band C - reduced by £5
Band D - no change
Band E - no change
Band F - Increase £25
Band G - new band for vehicles over 226g/km, Increase of £45 on the previous Band F position

Of course, high output cars are already taxed proportionately for their efficiency at the fuel pump.

But this isn't obviously having enough of an effect, as people keep producing and buying high emission cars! hence these new scales are introduced.

At least the Chancellor has reduced charges at the bottom of the scale for low emission cars, and not just used this excuse to raise the overall level of VED income.

... Exactly what I paid a few days back before the budget for the Roadster, no 'no change' overall.
