Changing gear box oil in my tubby..what type?..and where??

Post by darrenmr2 »

Hey guys im going to (attempt) to change the gear box oil in my rev 2 tubby 2moro. What oil would you lot suggest...and has anyone got a step by step guide (maybe inc. pics?) on how to do it and where the filling point is etc etc. Im pretty sure it has a LSD...does that make a difference in the oil or the quantity? Thanks in advance people 8)

Ps- would anyone recommend any type of additive for the oil?Only reason im changing it is cos ive just serviced the car and thought i may as well do the gearbox oil as well as it has been subjected to a little..erm..'hard driving' recently

This is what i use,

The drain plug is at the bottom of the box and the fill/level plug is halfway up.

Hey mark, thanks for that.Does the box take the full 5 litres? Also when you change the engine oil you need to replace a little copper washer on the drain plug..is this the case on the gear box drain plug or filler? Do they require a washer??Cheers mate 8)

There is a washer on the box plug but i've never needed to change it.

I think the box takes 4.2lts IIRC.

Ps- when my mate changed the gear box oil on his N/A he removed the rear passenger wheel and jacked the car over on an angle so he could get more oil in! Does this sound right or would you just advise doing it with the car level/flat?? Dont want to 'under' fill the box thats all..or alternatively 'over' fill it! cheers

Just do it flat mate, the fill level is at the height for a reason.

UNDOO THE FILLER PLUG BEFORE THE DRAIN PLUG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you dont want to find that the filler plug is unremovable after youve drained it!

The manuals state over 4 litres, I've never squeezed in anymore than around 3.8 litres.

thanks for the help guys and the tip re: the filler plug! How many of you havent done that before i wonder! lol 8) Am going to halfrauds to get 4 litresof 80w 90 semi synth oil..will that be ok cos ive searched the forum and a few people have mentioned you need to be careful what goes in an LSD box. Is this true or will any oil do?? Cheers

LS is for LSD's that are not in the gearbox (seperate rear axle etc.), It makes the syncros slippy too, which is quite obviously a bad thing. The one in the link is indeed the correct stuff.
