[Mk2 Generic] Getting a bike on my Mk2

Post by Tom G »

Hello,
I've been using my mk1 to kart my MTB about, on the roof. I'm looking at a mk2 today (more reliable hopfully) to replace my mk1, but it looks like I can't get roof bars for it.
It also looks like you can't get a tow bar.
Does anyone know if it's possible to carry a mountain bike on a mk2 MR2?? If so, how?

Help appreciated!! Cheers

you can get roof bars for it, thats how i carry my mountain bike, i got them off ebay for 25 quid but i think they are 150quid plus from toyota, i'll find out the part number from toyota so you could have heart failure at the price from mr t, not sure if you can get after market ones, i had to adapt the single bike carrier that i had as the roof bars are closer together than they would normally be due to the size of the roof of the car,

oh great that's cool, because i already have a modded bike carrier. I guess in that case that any gutterless bars will work on the non t-bars! I'll start ebay scavenging

Thanks

I'm sure my dad has a set of genuine toyota roof bars that he has no need for (sold his toyota a few years ago) that he'd be willing to sell.

If you are interested let me know the part number and i'll see if it matches.

I've got a towbar for a mk2 here, cost me £170 last year but have a Xantia estate now so no longer needed. Will sell for £50 plus p+p if you're interested. You can just about see it on the picture below.

I used a Thule 2 bike carrier on mine, no straps onto bodywork as it just locks onto the towball. Never took any pics of it though.

Thanks chaps, I'll gladly take the roof bars if they fit - if not, I'll think about the tow bar. I'll PM blue thunder for the part number.

I used a boot rack that was originally bought for an MGF. It sits nicely on the engine cover and the catches grip onto the engine cover edges. It worked rather well & wasnt too obvious when it was fitted. I have used it to cart 2 mountain bikes about. It is a bit fiddly to get them on there though. You just need to be carefull to keep the pedals etc away from the paintwork.

I also used it for carting wood etc about, I had two 4' by 4' sheets of ply on the back once! Looked like a huuuge spoiler!!

I also used it to get my 19's complete with tyres back over 100 miles I had two side by side and one in the centre ontop of the 2 with the last on the passenger seat. Looked even more like a paris - dakar car than it does with them fitted!

Just a possible option if you dont like roof bars.
