How easy to remove external trim?

Post by jsheathcote »

I'm getting ready for my body resto on my Mk1b and my majoy concerns are removal and replacement availability of external trim. I'm looking at starting all this sometime between mid December and mid January.

How easy is it to remove the trim from around the windows (front and side)?

If the windscreen has to come out how much is a replacement screen should it break?

Is all the trim still available for around the screen and side glass?

Are the trim strips (those plastic bodycoloured strips that run along the door and rear quarters) still available?

Also, if anyone has details of places to buy the above items please let me know.

Thanks,

Jay.

Well i managed to get a second hand strip for the top of my windscreen for £10 from ebay - they are very easy to replace - just dug all old dead sealant out from the top of the screen and laced it with some new - the ends slot into the side strips right at the top of the screen, then clamped it for about 5 hours for it to set and its done the job lovely

i would imagine they are just as easy to remove - just be careful round the glass

not sure about the other parts sorry

not as easy as that i`m afraid.if you intend to take off all the trim around the side windows then find out from toyota whats available.you WILL break some thing.the side stripes are a sort of plastic and are held on by double sided tape(but much stronger). the best way is with a bit of heat and a thin non scratch scraper.a filler applicator type of thing.these stripes will bend but you risk the surface cracking.again check with Mr T to see whats about.you may find some bits are no longer available while some are plentiful.
