[NA] Is a 2k RPM cold-idle normal..?

Post by Goto10 »

When cold my Mk1 idles at 2k rpm, seems a little high to me - once warmed up it settles down to a sensible idle. Anything I can adjust or is this normal?
Cheers.

yes - i think this is normal for idle at a clod start. ie: 1800/2000 revs.

this should go down to 800-1000 when engine is fully warm

Mine does the same - on cold startup idle is about 2k but as the car warms (2-3 minutes) the idle gradually drops to sensible levels.
I'm not saying that this is normal however, it's my first mr2 so i'm not sure!

Again, quite normal, its usually down to 1 of 2 things. Too much current draw, ie too much electricals on, or IIRC the wax-stat valve on the TVIS plenum, TBH if it works and is only dropping to 600 on hard driving only, I wouldnt worry, but you adjust the Auxilery Air Valve in order to adjust the idle speed.

Further to the original question, on a completely cold car, it is perfectly acceptable for the car to idle at 2400rpm and 800rpm when warm

yes its totally normal but its not how they should be...the waxstat stays open for far too long,in some cases 5 miles of driving before it totally closes...some dont close at all, some only fully close when the engine is very hot....either way its a design flaw,a 4a-ge will happily idle on its own after 60 seconds of auxilliary air,the rest of the time its just wasting fuel and making the car horrible to drive when cold,i hate the way they lurch coming to a junction when cold as you dip the clutch....the waxstat is a very poor design that doesnt do a good job even when its new.

Im not plugging you know what ....this is just my opinion of the standard cold start system, quite frankly its pants.

Ok I`ll plug it ! If you need to replace your wax stat or want to save on fuel then a Paul Woods choke kit is what you need.I have seen these in action ,they are designed by a Mk1 expert specially for the Mk1.They work brilliantly and are simple to fit, even jinxy could do it  .If you are not a purist then you would be foolish not to have one.

I'll 2nd that :D you'll soon recover the cost in fuel saving 8)

Yup it's normal. Both my mk1s do it. My mum had two brand new mk1s back in the 80s and they both did it.

The ignition timing (when at idle) in the ECU is mapped right up to 2000rpm. This is presumably to give optimal ignition timing during this warmup phase as the revs slowly fall from 2000rpm to 1000rpm.

cheers kev/jimi although im an affiliate i didnt want it to seem like a blatant money grabbing plug for the kit, just airing my opinion of the stock cold start system....the other thing i hate about it is you dont have to leave the car switched off for too long and its opened the waxstat again and high idling, especially in winter, this really isnt necessary.

Anyway enough ranting,those that know,know....
