SHIFT GONE

hi,
can you help me? I have a 89 mr2 5spd and while shifting gears very rapedly the shift lever suddenly got loose as if the links to the gears snaped somewhere. I had to drive the rest of the way home in 4th gear with an absolutely loose shift knob that moved freely from front to back. I removed the center console to get to the shift lever link and the lever seems to move back and forth with no resistance. any idea what or where it probably snaped?

the gear lever has a ball joint at the bottom which fits into a cup.it could be that this has come out or it could be one ,or both, cables has snapped.if you remove the plate the gear lever assembly can be removed /looked at.if you jack up the car or look from above you should be able to see the linkage where the cables attach.check these and get back to us. both are a bit fiddly but not difficult.i can find you the parts should you need them.
