CAN'T GET INTO GEAR

Hello, I have an '86 MR2 and I'm thinking you've seen this problem many times. The shifter, although firmly linked to the transmission, is unable to find 1st and 2nd gear. On ocassion, the shifter will find 1st and 2nd but this occurs very rare. I've tried to get the transmission in 1st by playing with the switches (where the cables attach) on the bellhousing but can't do it. Is this a problem with the shift cables (stretched out) or is this a transmission problem?
I live Stateside. Any favor I may return, please let me know.

Could well be be the gear cable, fraying.
They don't last forever,one of mine broke and i was left with 3rd and 4th gear only,no 1st ,2nd5th or reverse.
Had the cables changed and now no problem,except it still grates a little going into 3rd but i'm sure thats down to the gearbox.
