Track car

Post by King Stromba »

My MR2 was originally bought as a track car, but its in very good condition and i am reconsidering. How well do they stand up to track punishement?

Brake fade?
Engine problems?
Overheating?

Do they make good track cars?

You couldnt choose a better car for track usage IMO.

Engines are bullett proof as long as they are well maintained (even the slightly shabby ones just go on and on!)

Overheatingisnt too much of a problems AFAIK because the rad is right up at the front

Brakes, however, is a different matter!the early Mk1's had smaller rotors up front which were prone to wapring (very prone). Now thats not a bad thing, because upgrading to Mk1B brakes is pretty much a straight swap (they used larger calipers/discs). Saying that the discs themselves are cheap as chips nowadays from places like www.brakesint.co.uk which, too lift a commonly used phrase from Laurens book: "makes them almost a consumable"! ;)

IMO Good, clean, cheap and fast fun!

They're great track cars, I use mine on the track and it holds up extremely well. It's not mint but it isn't a rust bucket either.

I have experienced some brake fade but it's no big problem IMO. Get some decent pads and fluid and that cuts it down significantly.

they work well (i've tracked MK1s for the last 5 years).

Stock brakes with uprated pads eg Pagid fast road and some new fluid work very well. Just use stock discs and change them every couple of years. They are not expensive. Brakes need to be 100% though. They don't really have a problem with fading.

No engine problems, nor any overheating problems. Engine may use a bit of oil if its bounced off the rev limiter all day, but thats not really a problem.

If its well maintained then they take teh abuse very well.

Yes they are a lot of fun on track, i've driven nearly every track in teh uk and good half of them in europe in MK1 NAs and SCs etc. Even with only 120bhp round the Ring and Spa it was top fun.

Important thing is keep stock rims and use A539s (or whatever is replacing them) and it makes it lots of fun. Uprate dampers and springs. Just use Konis adjustables and fensport 20% (or 30%) uprated springs and it'll handle lovely.
