What are these for?

Post by un1eash »

Hi, I'm gonna put a K&N style filter on my inlet but what are these 2 sensors for and do both have to stay connected??....

Image

I was gonna fit the filter where the metal tube is or get another one and cut it down to the sensor and fit it onto the end, what do you think?

Also whats the diffenerce between a K&N 57i filter and a cheap universal cone filter, are cheaper ones more restrictive?

Cheers

Firstly,

the Sensor in the metal tube is the air temprature sensor

The sensor with pipes in it I believe is the cold start injector valve or the "idle up" valve.

If the Mr2 is special to you go for K&N without a doubt, they dont supply million mile warrenties for nothing you know ;)

Personally I would go K&N because the filtration of them are second to none, nothing beats them. Whatever you do dont go down the budget "Max Power" range as found in argos ](*,) ](*,)

I've installed mine just after the Temp Sensor by cutting the metal tube down to size as I already had a 57i from an old car of mine, however I cant hear the induction roar because its quite low to the ground (just below the battery tray) so I think I will get one to bolt straight onto the throttle body

How bout if i put the filter straight on the inlet with the idle up value in the back then leave the metal tube with sensor and upwards bend part on as a cold air feed. The air temp sensor wont screw up the engine will it?

Hmmm :-k

Cant quite remember, if you jump over to K&N's website they have fitting instructions that tell you how the routing of pipework goes.

IIRC They have a hole for the temp sensor to fit at the back of the filter, and plug up the idle up valve, but could be wrong

mine had a K&N on when i bought the car but the sensors were nowhere to be seen - had been removed. BUT the car was running really crap, especially when engine up to full running temp. hence i have now got the sensors, plugged em back in to the connectors, but just need to put them into the air intake between the filter & tvis. running better already but should be sorted when i finish.

so....yes do fit them in again IMHO

Air temp sensor you need, though idle up you don't really. On Mk1as the air temp sensor is on the inlet manifold so its easier to stick on a K&N on the early engine.

Why not just put the K&N on before the air temp sensor? I guess you could plumb it into the back of the filter.
