Lesson learnt

Post by miss mk1 »

well i was supposed to be coming to donnington on sunday but decided after too much beer the day before that i couldnt face it

well i thought i best change the oil in the mr2 while i wasnt busy - so i gets all the bits and drains the oil out - and i couldnt believe it - only 1 litre of oil came out of the engine!!!!!!

No wonder it was making a hideous grinding noise!!!

Needless to say the noise stopped when i put the new oil (and correct amount back in)!!

Ive learnt my lesson - to check the oil regularly, i thught the engine was on the way out- but it was something so simple - i really hope i havent done and real damage!

As long as the noise stopped, you're probably OK. Have to admit, I don't check mine often, but it's never used a drop. If it did start using it, I probably wouldn't notice until it was too late!

Cheers,

One thing to check, if it isn't too late already, is to (while wearing some protective gloves), run your hands through the oil which came out and see if it's still 'oily' or slightly 'gritty'. That'll give you a really (really) rough idea if you've managed to do any damage or not.

The second thing is to keep a close eye on it, now you've refilled it, is that the oil which was in there before must have gone somewhere, so check that you haven't got a leak anywhere (camcovers, sump, distributor, oil filter etc) or that the engine is actually using oil.

Good job anyway, glad you've found it now, rather than on some journey somewhere.

If its the sump gasket is it an engine-out job to fit a new one? or can i do it from under the car?

Taking the sump off from below with the car on axle stands is a doddle, but needs a little careful maneuvering round the oilpump intake. Note that there isn't a gasket as such - its sealed with silicon ( I used the orange Hermetite stuff when I did mine )
