Coolant flushing

Post by Faffer »

Hi all

New MR2 owner here, having just picked up my first MR2 on saturday. Very impressed with the handling of it, not nearly as twitchy on the limit as i was expecting :)

Anyway, I was driving it hom last night after buying it and I noticed overheating...prior to that, it was idling erratically. After doing a little research on various MR2 websites, I decided to flush the cooling system today and make sure there were no air pockets in the system when refilling. This appears to have solved the problem and the car is now running sweet!

However, there was a lot of murky liquid in the expansion tank and I could not find a way to drain it. How would I go about draining or removing the expansion tank? Does it simply pull out of it's mounting in some way?

Thanks

Frank

The expansion tank slots into a bracket on the bulkhead, it'll be a bit stiff but it does lift out. Get your hand under it and give it a good yank.

Yup, give it a good tug, straight up and it will break free!

Enjoy your new pocket rocket!

Make sure you clean out the pipe from the thermostat bleed to the expansion bottle at the same time...

And make sure you do up the thermostat bleed valve, otherwise you'll have lots of steam coming out of your engine lid :)

Don't know anyone that's done that.....
