A wiring harness warning!

Post by Mk1 Turbo Powered Steve »

I can't say where i got this info from but could be of some interest.
Im not sure if this info has been posted on here before and unfortuanetely is not very detailed, with no piccies.

The best way i can describe it ,is make sure you check your wiring loom where it comes over the side of the head, nearest to the battery.
From what i have read there is a very sharp lip that can over time, wear into the loom and to hopefully solve the problem all you need to do is file the sharp edge away!
The person concerned almost had a severe fire but he luckily managed to put the fire out but had to fit a new wiring loom because of it!

Sorry for the lack of details and piccies but i'm sure i would not allowed or welcome to post them on here.

I am also not very techie with comps,so wouldn't be able to do it anyway!

It's just something i will definately be checking on my SC!

I hope you can understand what i am trying to say,as i have not heard of this problem before!!

HTH, somebody!

I believe the sharp edge is on the nearside of the inlet manifold on the N/A (don't know if it's the same on the S/C). The rocking of the engine slowly wears the loom casing away.

I had a major melt down which almost led to a fire in my old coupe.

I met the guy who wrote the article for the MR2DC, I have the article here, with pictures, however I'm not too sure the DC would want me to scan and show. cut a long story short the guy in question had a fire started, he was using fire extinguishers, but as soon as it went out, it flared up again, because the battery was still connected!

he had to drop a new loom in, however he suggested using a small piece of plastic tubing on the edge that sits on the TVIS intake manifold.

Personally, I've not done it but I do keep an eye on the loom, but no wear as of yet

Another thing to note is if you do have a fire, the fuel rail line is just below the loom  so he was taking his life into his own hands (classic "dont try this at home kids " quote ;) )
