really daft question- sorry

Post by miss mk1 »

I have been looking around the forum and noticed that everyone either has mk1 a or mk1 b next to their car - now i have seen garricks mk1a - and i know mine isnt an 'A'

Does that automatically make it a 'b'?

sorry for the daft question

Thanks

Yup that will make yours a mk1b.

i dont know the years but the older mk1s have a few differences, main one being the side vent.

thanks - mine is one of the last 1989 - garrick pointed out the differences when we went to japshow earlier in the year - the side vent is different, the bumpers are not colour coded on his - dont know if that the same for all mk1 a's - cant remember any more but im sure there are more than that

im sure there will be a post about it already - ill have a search

thanks

they went through 'the change' at E reg i think, there are also one or two cars with parts on from both. Generally the side vent and front end is the exteroir give-away to tell, and the heater controls and window switches in the interoir.

oops - meant the round bits of moulding and shape of door cards look different. not 100% sure about the actual switches but have a hunch they are different from when i had to replace one of mine - saw different ones listed on ebay

I think there were three variations on the front bumper, just to confuse things further:

The original type, with black insert - this part of the bumper is vertical
Second type, same shape as first one but all colour coded ( not sure if this was on a 1a or 1b )
Final type, where the bit that was vertical is now sloped

D reg is the one where you will get MK1a's and MK1b's. there were quite few changes between the first and facelift models but the didn't all happen at the same time. The main ones being brakes, rear suspension, front bumper style, aerial position, air filter location/induction routing, some interia style changes, seats, door cards, steering wheel, ash tray, clock graphics etc. The main engine change oddly happened later so early E reg MK1b's still had "Blue top engines" but later induction systems this is not a definitive list I'm sure someone will post that  'course there is no such thing as a daft question just one you dont yet know the answer to, that is why afterall this forum exists

every day is a learning day :? yesterday I learned that 1a &1b rear lighs are different, 1b lefthand side (passenger side on RHD cars) bulb holders are split so that you can access the bulbs without removing the panel over the air filter  so much knowlegde so little use

Mine is an E but is a 1b. I don't think there is a definitive list. As kevin..in says around 87 was when they chanegd I think Mr T just kept fitting 1a parts until they were used up.
Black is not a colour ! .... Its the absence of colour

A bit like the rear anti-roll bar - it seems that it was pot-luck whether you got one or not during that period.

Hi Kev ,i'm sure you already know this but for some reason the swiches for lights and wipers on the early ones, come down on a slight angle, rather than being straight on the 1b's.
What i want to know is what is the point as hardly anyone would ever notice!!

If i still had my mk1a,i'm sure i would come up with other differences but i have forgotten most of them

firstly though its no big deal but kevin has an in as in kevin..in. I'm not sure as to why they changed the angle of the switches maybe something to do with the ability to catch them with finger tip and switch the light off though I have done this on my 1B on an unlit road and its quite scarry as you dont know where the world has gone .  it could even be that with the switches pointed down the dash looks sad and sybolism is very important in Japanese culture. after writing what I said was not the definitive list i also could add another twenty or so mods from 1a to 1b
