CAN I TURBO MY MK1?

Post by RichardMorgan »

Do you know if it is possible to turbocharge the stock MK1 engine - has anybody done it, is there enough room?

Cheers.

I believe it is, yes, although it's a lot more sensible to turbocharge a SC, rather than an NA engine - lower compression better for forced induction, as well as an ECU which 'understands' boost pressure in the inlet side.

Lauren & Toni both have uber-flash turbo manifolds for a 4agze, but I don't know if they are both for sale or not.

added..
There was a thread about this a while back started by mk1mr2chick, but I can't find it right now..
I think ferral has a turboed mk1?

Yes you can! There are plenty of examples of turbocharged 4AGE's. You can either run low boost with stock pistons or change to 4AGZE pistons and run a higher boost. Or you can fit a thick gasket instead.

Or two standard gaskets. :-$ I've had a look, but not a run :( in John's (Feral's) 4AGTE Mk1 and was really impressed with the set-up. If it's still running after 2 years and has survived a trip round Oz it's gotta be alright!

P.S Tom I got a couple of engine bay pics for you but there wasn't much space to get the camera in round the edges and get clear shots.

I am currently gathering the parts to complete a 4AGTE conversion on my mk1.

I am hoping to use a cut down and modified original manifold with a T25 and modified downpipe from a Saab 900.

The tuning is a bit special so you will have to wait and see if this works. If I get a good result there is a possibility of making a kit of the required parts up for other people to have go.

I will let everyone on here know once i have the manifold built up and on the rebuilt engine I intend to use.

If there is anyone out there who would just be after the manifold I can have a word with the guy who is going to do mine and see if he would be up for making a few more.

Just a quick question does anyone know if there is anyone still using the TVIS system with a Turbo or is it better just to junk it?

I went through an awful lot of research when thinking about this, rally2 manifolds and R33 GTST turbines etc etc. Eventually I decided that in pure monetary and reliability terms, it is so much easier just to go with a 3SGTE, unless you have a GZE block you can get hold of very cheap.

tom bin the T-VIS!!!!

i did mine a while ago and to be fair didnt loose a great deal but gained enough to match the extra fow in the top end...... i.e where your turbo will be boosting!!!!!

i removed the t-vis butterfly's from the t-vis plate with mine IMO dont beleive it's needed with the gte.
though i know some of the US guy's are leaving the t-vis butterfly plates in (havnt really seen anyone post data on how a gte goes with or without the t-vis operational).

tom mk1,
just be careful where you cut the manifold. i used my original ex manifold when i 1st did my gte conversion. i cut it just below where the lower bolt goes for the heat sheild, this had the 2 main runner lined up perfectly to 'braze' on a steel flange i cut out. problem is at that spot the turbo is positioned too low and i had oil return/smoke issues. when you cut the manifold up higher the 2 main runners seperate making it harder to put on a turbo flange. (if i was on my computer i would be able to upload a diagram i did of it). it worked out much easier to make myself a simple log type manifold (and it was cheap too). :)
