Wheel sizes

Post by miss mk1 »

Hi there im looking to get a new set of wheels for my mk1 - just wanted an idea of what sizes to get - im getting 15" wheels but what width do i need?

and would i be better to get wider wheels on the back?

would this give better grip?

thanks

15s are good for 0-60 sprints and drags but if your after looks go for a set of 17s , and yes wider rears will help performance. The lighter your wheels the better too.

thing is 15s dont usually have much in the way of width!

The excellent Toyo T1S is available (in theory) in 215/45 R15 (http://www.toyo.com/tires/tire_specsheet.cfm?id=20). That'll give you pretty close to the correct rolling diameter and will fit onto a 7" wide rim, of which there are plenty available (both my cars are on 15x7s). Don't expect those tyres to be either readily available or cheap though...

The 205s on the front of my burgundy car rub the wheel arch liners at full lock, so you might want to stick to 195/50s there.

I have a set of brand new, never used Speedline Chronos 16 inch by 7inch with Toyo Proxes T1-S 195/45/R16 tyres. Fitted with stainless steel racing valves and even come complete with a set of Speedline wheel nuts. They are all new, only ever fitted one to see what my (now abandoned) Mk1 project car would look like with them. These cost me £750, but I am willing to consider any sensible offer if you are interested.

Kind regards

15s are a good compromise... 17s look awful IMHO.

get 195/50/15s all round.. that way you keep the same rolling radius as stock.

Wider tyres will just make it tramline all over the place and will not improve performance. 215s are way too wide. It'll be the most boring, tramlining drive you'll ever have.

go for F1s (road work, not good for track). Or SO3s for both.

you will get more mechanical grip with wider tyres yes. But you will lose the progressiveness of the handling if you go really low profile.
