Post by alan69b12 »

I Have recently restored my aw11 after 3 years of indignity.Everything was perfect but recently on choke the tickover is irrattic.it seems to blip the throttle from 1500rpm to anything uptp 3000rpm.Its making me look like a boy racer at the lights...

I'll move this over to the Mk1 Club section.

Sounds like it may be a little air in the coolant - the idle will 'bounce' as air/steam travels past the coolant temperature sensor.

Either air in the coolant system or knackered wax-stat in the throttle body, easiest & cheapest is to bleed the cooling system first as per the haynes manual, Jinxy

IIRC, the haynes manual advocates the removal of the 'drain plugs' from the pipes running under the car - don't bother, at best they won't move, at worse, they'll shear off...

Just use the rad drain tap to drain the system, and then bleed it from the top of the rad, the heater, the block and the bleed point on the top of the gearbox. Good luck :thumleft:

It helps it drain if you can either jack up the rear or park nose down on a hill when you drain it.

If he's just bleeding the system he doesn't need to worry about the drain plugs. Bleeding it is much simpler.

However if we're on the topic of draining the coolant I still think you struggle to beat my own paptented method of firing a (clean) garden leaf blower down the filler cap with the rad hoses off. Works a treat. Non of this tipping the car up and down lark. 8)
