[Mk2] [Turbo] No bov

Post by mr2nut123 »

I'm sure a can of worms will be opened here...but is it ok to run no bov with a CT20 at 1bar?

I've seen lots of YouTube vids with what look like experienced MR2 guys that have been running this way for years. I.e:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaaQ5orTgVk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-6em54zkDc

Thoughts? I personally love the flutter sound, it's what I missed from my previous 3071 car more than the power itself. :-k

lol. So many mixed reviews :)

IF I was going down the no bov route, what would be the best way with the stock turbo?

I find running with a bov makes it feel quicker / less spool up needed during gear changes.

Sounds better running without one though

I'd run a bov if your on the standard ceramic shaft ct20 though!

I went without a dumpvalve for a few weeks, loved the sound however I took advise from C35ROB as to why you should use one, so many stories, both good and bad however after reading what garrett had to say on the matter I would prefer not to add extra stresses on the turbo.
On a ct20b with it's ceramic shaft I definitely wouldn't even consider it, not saying it wouldn't be fine for years, just not worth the risk is all 8-[

I was running 1.2bar on CT20 with no bov for a last year and nothing wrong happened. Will be running with no bov further with TD05.

Sounds good! What would you say the best way to do it would be? I've heard of different ways you can do it. If you have a link to what I'd need to buy and a pic of the final job that would be excellent. :thumleft:

I chose the simplest one, just took the hoses off the bov and that's it. If you wish a bit cleaner engine bay, you need to put blanking plate in a place of bov.
Don't forget to block off the vacuum hoses of course :)

Don't have any pics, but it's really simple :)
There are two vacuum hoses going to bov (if it's a stock one). You just need to take them off and block with something. I use a bolt when I don't have anything better near me :)

The factory valve is fitted for noise reduction and to a lesser extent, emissions.

The ST185 GT-Four was never fitted with one from the factory and they use the same engine and turbo combo as the 1989-1993.10 SW20 turbo.

You don't see ST185s with broken ct26s anymore than you do SW20s.

Cheers for the info, I never knew that! So the GT4 makes the fluttering turbo noise?

it probably does with an open intake and more boost.

with 10psi and the stock airbox you probably wouldnt hear it anyways.

i have my bov set to as tough as itll go, (adjustable hks).
if i had an option id fit a block off plate, but i have the hks adapter welded into my ic pipe, so makes things more difficult.

i think if you have a bov that pushes the valve closed when boost is applied, you can just remove the vac line and block.

but if you have a bov that requires boost from the vac line to stay closed, then itll possibly leak boost.

I'm tempted to go without a bov but I cant think of a good way to block off the outlet on the 205cc

I have the stock recirculating bov. I'm still a little confused on which pipes to block without a picture so don't fancy taking the risk.

Care to mspaint some arrows to which pipes I should block off? Maybe add it as a sticky as it gets asked quite a bit :oldtongue:

Here you go :thumleft:
You can leave bov pipes open.
