[Mk2] [Turbo] improving steering and front end feel

Post by gnzyza »

Hi guys, was looking at what people have done to improve high speed steering feel and front planted-ness :D

My cars lowered 40mm on yellow billies, fully poly bushed and full geo done. It feels great, very dampened and soaks up the bumps and corners flat etc

But at speed the car feels unstable , most noticed on smaller steering inputs.
I know the front end is light but wondered if there is anything worth checking, replacing steering, front side or any mods that would help.

The ps is working correctly.

Bag of cement in the frunk? ;)

Do you have the proper undertrays fitted?

A member here had the car corner weighted and swore by it.....

:D all under trays fitted. Would need coilovers to have that done.

The car handles fine in fact its great and goes exactly where you point it. I'm looking at getting that extra bite from the front and confidence at speed. [/list]

Is a jap import and does it have the delimiter fitted properly?

There is an issue that if there is a converter at the clocks end the power steering doesn't switch off at speed causing a light feeling.

You can overcome this by either fitting a stef delimiter or fitting UK clocks.

I had the clocks out the other day and nothing fitted. The ps is working correctly at speed. Its one of the things I've looked at as seen it mentioned here.

You know it makes sense...we've done two now, it's a pretty easy mod if you're prepared to get stuck in- and you can make it as straight forwards, or as complicated as you like...and I'd be happy to help once my car's running :thumleft:

Thanks for the offer :thumleft: Happy to get stuck in. my plans were to keep the motor fairly standard looking but something to think over.

We'll have to meet up sometime and give your opinion/pointers on my setup.

I don't have them, do they really make that much of a difference?

Yep my RX8 is fitted with speed flaps on all four wheels from factory. It is a ton more stable at speed than the MR2 was. Too bad it takes twice as long to get there :eye:

Beat me too it, well worth it. Mr2 Ben £55 or Mr T will get them for you.

Doesn't work if you want to keep the stock looks but a proper front splitter would do a lot of good on an MR2.

Alternatively up the grip of your front tyres further? Go for a really serious tyre that you know has good grip. I wonder if you could get a PSS or something. Of course there's the AD08/R888 options but you really have to commit for that

If I was going to make changes would choose a aeroware or similar with a 40mil drop should make a decent improvement.

I'm planning on running a more sticky tyre(currently on T1R's) but want see what can else can be done.

I'm thinking mocking up some speed flaps from some Ali and use some bendy abs plastic to see if I can reduce the high pressure area around the wheel well.

The bulkhead seems the biggest problem though, venting that you can run a flatter floor past the wheels and control air flow better.

Definitely change your tyres.

If your not tracking your car i'd recommend rainsport 3's they are really good!!

Nothing wrong with T1-Rs if you run the right pressures, certainly they've never made either of my 2s 'floaty' at speed. That said a bit of experimentation with those pressures may help… Are you running on standard wheels and rubber… i.e. 195/55/15 at the front?

Other considerations without changing from original specs (which I'd guess were designed and developed originally not to feel floaty) include I believe rubber components in the steering system which can perish just like the suspension bushes and of course those suspension bushes themselves…

What rev is the car?

They are by far the worst tyre I ever had. Useless in the damp or wet.

My cars a rev3, anything in particular I can check or is serviceable? The car is fully poly bushed, handles great round corners just not planted at high speed, or confidence inspiring.

T1R's wont be causing the problem here, sure we can argue about grip level etc and I would agree they're not great in the wet. I will be changing to a more track focused compound.

What pressures are you running in the fronts? Might be worth dropping them a few psi. How old are the tyres you've got on now? What camber are you running at the front also?
