Check the speedo sender in the gearbox would be a good place to start

Would rather fix the speedo cause on the MOT it'd show as i've done no mileage, next owner would think the clocks had been turned back or something

Check the sender is producing an output, this would require a scope, also check continuity from the sender to the clocks. After that check the clocks.

Also does your car have a speedo converter fitted? If so try removing it temporarily it also may have failed

In my experience it's either the nylon ring gear on the diff or the nylon gear on the speed sensor. Remove the sensor from the gearbox and take a look.

How do you get around it going into limp mode when ECU doesn't get a speed signal for 3secs?

On getting it working.
Check purple wire from sender to clocks.
Check the sender still has the nylons wheel as they come off.
Check nylons toothed wheel in gear box, they tend to snap.

My speedo don't work as nylon toothed wheel in gearbox just spins freely

Yeah I had a non working speedo and it was the gear in the gearbox. Gearbox out job unfortunately.

the car doesn't go into limp mode with no speed signal it just logs a code 42 which doesn't put the light on

Yeah I've currently got a not working speedo and it's logging a code 42 but no limp mode, not even looked at it yet but I'm hoping its just the sender in the box.

I don't want to burst anyones bubble, but if you have a non functioning speedo and the cause is the ring gear on the diff then you're in deep doodoo!! This part ist one of thousands of discontinued parts (I have a large list of part numbers on the german board) that are not available new anywhere :-(

The small nylon gear on the sensor itself is still available though!
