coilovers

Post by robbie_742003 »

Hi all, my car has developed a knocking from the rear passenger and seems to be getting worse (or could be paranoid). My very friendly local mr2 specialist tells me I've got cusco coilovers and I've had a good look over all the suspension and the only thing I can see which is suspect is the centre nut isn't that tight on the stud. I've tried to tighten it but if just turns with the strut.
Is there anything i can do, my knowledge is very limited with these.
Thanks
Rob

Forgot to mention, the centre nut is only hanging onto the stud by a few threads, danger? :-(

Im guessing by centre stud you mean the centre of the strut that passes through the top mount? of so there's not usually much thread sticking out past the nut but the nut should be tight

Have you checked your rear drop links at all?

Yeah the centre of the strut, there is no thread proud of the nut, the nut is only a few threads on the strut.

Yeah I've checked the drop links and can't feel any excess play, they feel pretty tight.
What's the procedure for changing the top mounts, is it reasonably easy to do?

Thanks for the replies guys :thumleft:

Well if youve got coilovers the topmounts usualy have a spherical bearing which will have excess play. You'd have to remove the whole unit from the car and check.

Ball joints make a hell of a racket over bumps when they go.

+1 :thumleft: I changed to BC coilovers and Whiteline arbs but did the droplinks to try and refresh as much of the suspension as I could. Unfortunaely the car would still 'bottom out' (metal to metal) if I went over a pothole on the n/s wheel.

The moment I changed the ball joints it stopped, well worth it for £50ish all round but a beatch to get the old ones off.
