[Mk2] [Turbo] Which turbo?

Post by Ryan S »

ok, so on the hunt for an externally gated turbo, something that has similar spool to a CT20 but maybe a bit more efficient? max power I would want it to be capable of is around 350-400bhp.

so, answers below please folks, was hoping to spend under £1000, it'll also be getting used in conjunction with a GT4 CC set up, so proper fitment for this set-up is a must :thumleft:

It's compromise, big bhp & lag or quick spool lower bhp....

I would imagine if you're looking at 350-400bhp, you'd be looking at Greddy TD06 or similar.

If you want more efficiency forget the old school turbos and look to the new breeds...GTX28 is what you need (or GTX30 if you want more power) :thumleft:

In an ideal world i'd want much the same as stock but colder air. I love the ct20 spool up i'd happily keep it if it was able to do a bit more.

There are better things out there now that mean less lag & more power...which is a good thing, so in comparison, yes - old school does mean bad (relatively of course!)

CT20b is a great turbo too. I'm having one refurbished and rebuilt with a steel shaft replacing the ceramic item, and a 360 degree thrust washer replacing the stock 270 degree item.

CT20b, as you know has great spool, just needs a few weak points addressing, as described above.
Obviously if you're after 350-400bhp, then the CT20b has to go.

Just looking to push as much power out of the stock fuel system as possible, similar to JDs old setup, i'd be happy with that, realistically i'd be looking at upgrading that too later on.

Seriously--- at least look at the GTX28, it will cost you a little bit more (if you buy one from the US), but it's a better investment and will put a bigger smile on your face...

Cool man, how much are we talking? What adapters would that need? I could fab up most of the fitting kit but i would prefer to use the stock manifold.

I was running way too lean on the stock fueling with the same set-up as JD. You'll need to upgrade the fuel pump to run that sort of power safely. (Not sure what my IDC was but I've upgraded injectors anyway)

GTX uses the new compressor wheel...basically capable of flowing more air, but also spools up earlier...result = more power with better spool.

It's like most things- technology moves on, and in the world of turbos things have significantly moved on since the CT's and TD's...so why not take advantage? Only problem is they do cost more, but if you're careful where you buy from and who imports it for you the difference in price is well worth it.

IMO :thumleft:

Oh- and the GTX uses the same turbine housing at the GT series, so one of the standard ex mani adaptors would work just fine :thumleft:
