new mr2 owner

Post by mr2paul »

Hi

Loved these cars for years and finally got one.

Pictures to follow, but it's a 96 t bar.

First of I'm sure will be many questions is, I was told it was a sonic shadow model but my insurance company said it was a 10 year anniversary model....are these the same or how can I tell which it is?

Cheers

Sonic shadow is silver paintwork with a black roof :)

Yep

That's what it is, silver and black roof.

Bit of an eBay gamble.

Drives well but looks unloved, already found hole in rear valence corner

Anything I should look out for...

How easy is a cam belt to do?

Cheers

Unfortunately, as these cars get older, they are starting to show the number one weak spot. This is the sills, primarily the rear sill section.

Here's pics of mine before having a new section welded in, and after:

Many others have had to have similar work done. :(

Welcome to imoc

First job you need to do is check the rear sill area starting from the inside - remove the rear side interior panels situated behind the seats ( where the rear speakers sit )

You'll find a piece of foam stuffed into the rear corner of the sill . Fiddle to do, but pull it out from both sills and bin it. This is because the foam collects water and causes it to rot from inside out.

Then it's time to check the outer sills .

Apart from this area of the sills these cars are not too bad corrosion wise. Nip any rust in the bud right away and you'll be fine.

Have fun with your new toy :thumleft:
