[Mk2] [NA] [mk2] Possible engine removal?

Post by snooplotty »

Bought a import MK2 auto for £200 as apparantly all it needed was the water pump replacing, it came with the new pump and new belts which was nice! The guy I bought it off decided to remove the oil sump and exhaust downpipe for some strange reason. Also the sills are in a pretty bad way - hence £200!!

Sorted the replacement thanks to Jim S and his cambelt change walkthrough.
Refitted the sump & "tried" refitting the exhaust, started up and runs sweet apart from the crush rings not sealing on the manifold. One of the studs threads have stripped.
So now the exhaust manifold had to be removed so I can rethread or replace the stud. 4 of the nuts came off the manifold to block ok, the other 2 looks like they may have stripped the threads in the block, plus the 2 bolts at the bottom of the manifold are solid, no amount of hammering / heating would make them budge.
I think the only option I have is to drop the engine to get the manifold off and possibly helicoil the block.

Anyone have any pointers before I take on this daunting task? read through a few "How To's" and looks straightforward enough.

Cheers

Pointer number one and by far the most important thing.

Bag and detail label EVERYTHING!!!

I followed this guide

http://turbomr2.com/MR2/HowTo/Engine_Up ... GTE-01.htm

Obviously It would be different for an N/A auto but you get the idea. Take your time make sure you've got the tools and a good place to work.

2 people can have the engine out in a day. :thumleft:

I know how you feel. But you can do other maintenance while you've got the the engine out it is much easier to work on.

Oh nad make sure you've got something decent to drop the engine onto.

Didnt really want to go to this extreme!
But your right, i can clean / repair other bits a hell of a lot easier.
It was meant to be my daily drive so i could take my ford probe off the road and work on that.

Dropped the engine, suprisingly it was quite straightforward. But i would reccomend using 2 skateboards

Drilled out the stripped studs and did a general clean up

Getting it back in was pretty easy, just got to put both drive shafts back and repair one sill and then shes ready for MOT
