[Mk2] [NA] Brake upgrade

Post by F9_adm »

Hi my front pads and discs are due to be changed for a new set, but I thought I may as we'll upgrade them at the same time,

I've heard of a couple of options one being the caliper and brake disc set up from a nissan 200sx and the other being fitting larger discs from a mazda I believe,

Any input would be gratefully received as to what I need to complete the upgrade and which is actually worth doing,

Many thanks ads

I'd say standard disks and calipers with carbotech pads.

:thumleft: Really good on the road and track.

very few people upgrade the brakes beyond pads as very few people see the point in changing the original brilliant design that Toyota used from oo the 1980's? If however you have your reasons for changing discs and calipers outwith the OEM kit, it is highly advisable to change the front and rear so that you maintain as near the factory brake balance as is possible.

The Nissan 200 calipers with either 315mm lexus or 325mm supra discs on the front and the rx8 323mm front disc fitted to the rear using the stock rear caliper (keeps your handbrake) is used upgrade and no one has died from the car swapping ends under braking. There is also the wms kit that fits under the stock wheels and bigger if you want bigger discs.

I am in the boat where I agree that changing the brakes for say 200 calipers and the equivilent rear's is a great idea. Just as long as the brake bias and balance is correctly set then yes you can most certainly improve braking by a decent percent.

As long as it is all done properly its a fantastic idea. I'd just worry about people who don't and make an already tail happy car even worse under heavy braking.

Agreed :thumleft: rev2/3/4/5 calipers + discs and carbotech pads, stopping powers amazing, I got mine from Curt Andrews Motorsports in the us, his shop it right next to carbotech .. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Legends-Race-Ca ... 3e&vxp=mtr .. cost me $130 odd iirr a set plus postage a taxes , still worked out much cheaper than buying from the uk.

I think carbotechs are a bit pricey. We use yellow stuff front and rear with racing brake fluid and aftermarket hoses. Total price about 170 quid, brakes will not fade one bit and have terrific power on our local track. Just my opinion. I only upgrade if it really makes a difference in the real world.

Toyota really got it right with the rev2 on brakes. Non abs setup seems to have more feel and initial bite. Real enemy is seized pistons and sliders.

I have yellow stuff front and rear on my st205, they came with the car #-o .
Got no experience of what there like on the track but on the road all I can say is there a disgrace, if I said carbotech are 50% better I would be talking up yellow stuff
Cant weight to swop my yellow suff for carbotech, I will be the last of the late breakers again :D

They might be a bit pricey but I thought i'd rather not spare expense on stuff that slows me down at a racetrack.

Although i've been a bit put off ebc stuff ever since I used a set of redstuff pads that performed worse on the road than std toyota pads.
