[All] [Generic] Oil Catch Can

Post by Andy_MR2_Rev2 »

Can anyone tell me what the purpose of an oil catch can is?

The point of a catch can is to minimize the amount of oil vapour that's fed into an engine's air intake tract.

Best off with a baffled catch can that the oil clings to and collects at the bottom of the can. Stock rev3 turbo oil catch can would be the best bet.

Been wondering about fitting a stock rev3 catch can to my rev2, presumably it's just a case of blocking off the pipe that's normally used to feed any oil collected back into the sump, and finding some way of fixing it in a convenient spot?

Are pipe sizes the same?

You might want to think about that...

Well perhaps foolishly, I didn't think the rev 2 had a point built in that I could easily return any oil to, and would therefore have to empty the can via that return feed from time to time. But as I've read it's a bad idea to vent to atmosphere on a catch can on a rev 2 as this can upset the AFM, I assumed I'd need to plug the return feed on the catch can in normal use.

Or am I missing something?

Any catch can fitted to a Rev1/2 will need to be recirculated.

IMHO, if you're engine is healthy and not modified to any great degree, i wouldn't bother fitting one.

Ah perhaps I've not explained myself very well. It was always my intention to drop the catch can into the existing pipe, and so re-circulate back through the intake system. I was just checking if it was OK to block off the third outlet from the rev 3 can which I understand is normally used to feed any oil that collects in the can back into the sump on the rev 3.

It's not a heavily modified tubby, but has been fitted with an Apexi air intake, ct20 rev 3 turbo, "Greddy" style intercooler and a HKS twin exhaust system. I only found a few odd traces of oil in the intake when I fitted the Apexi, but have heard that this can make it's way to the intercooler causing that to under perform, so as there's a cheap rev 3 catch can going at the moment in these forums thought it might be woth checking if it would fit the rev 2.

Just a thought.

I think I've got you. You could try and check the flow paths on the catch can, just bung the drain one, use it to empty the catch tank.

Not sure how efficient they are, but owt's better than nowt.
