[Mk2] [NA] Two horns...?

Post by TheLepresean »

How hard would it be to wire each of the horn buttons on the steering wheel?

Contrary to the majority of people, I quite like the standard MR2 horn... it's very sports-car-y, and is brilliant for beeping at people you know etc etc. However, when some b*stard cuts me up/does something inanely stupid (a common enough thing in London...) I want some kind of dual horn from an ocean liner to tell them what I think of them!

How possible would it be to wire the left hand button on the steering wheel to the standard peep peep horn, and the right hand button to some massive truck horn type thing (more likely a dual air horn from Halfords)?

Thanks,
Sean

It would be non trivial... there is only the one connection that goes through the collar.

It can be done, but you'll need to make the two buttons into potential dividers and then control which horn to activate by some electronics or a PIC.

That all sounds very complicated to me, partly because I don't understand half of it... what's a PIC?

easiest option is to use a different switch for the secondary horn, i used to have a dixie horn on my car (aged 17 so shoosh please) and had it on a separate spring switch :thumleft:

Ah fair enough... and haha! There's someone with a Bel Air that lives around the corner to me and he has a Dixie horn! Mm, ok I might just change the normal horn out for a loudish horn... any recommendations?

yeah, get yourself an air horn with dual horns, very easy to install and you won't get anything louder than it :)

It is complicated, because you're trying to get one wire to do two jobs. As others have said, if you want a second horn it'll be much easier to mount a second switch somewhere.

I was in a taxi in Kuala Lumpur once and the driver had rigged up a horn button on the shaft of the gear stick. He drove along with one hand on the wheel and one hand clasping the gear stick, beeping the horn with his little finger at every possible opportunity

Presumably at some point the wire from each of the buttons join into the one wire that leads to the horn, what I was meaning is would it be possible to sever one of the wires just before this join, extend it and link it to a different larger horn?

Yes, it would be "possible"... but because that happens before the collar on the steering column you would need to find your own way of getting that wire from a moving steering wheel to the car body. I guess you could use coiled telephone cable that wrapped itself around the column as you turned corners... :pale:

That is brilliant. I want a switch mounted on my gear knob. I don't really care what it does, I just want one there.

Thanks Sheppy, I had dual air horns in my first car (a very fine mk2 Punto) because I got sick and tired of being cut up... might have to buy some more.

Ah ok, I don't really fancy the telephone wire idea :p I love the idea of a gearstick mounted horn though... that is something I'm going to have to look into now... :thumleft:

Of course horn buttons are on steering wheels because that's where you're supposed to have your hands... just saying
