[Mk2] [Turbo] air con problem

Post by markstevieandmads »

Gradually getting through my jobs list on my turbo.
Next problem is the air con button has never lit up. There is no change in engine tone when pressed, just doesn't do anything.
As I've now got full leather and being a black car ...I want to sort this before the summer.

So where can I start looking?

If there's no gas, would it still light up? Any one know where the fuses and relays are for it?

AC Compressor won't kick in without gas. But the AC button will light up as long as the heater fan is on something other than OFF e.g. AUTO etc.

I know this because my AC gas seems to escape e on a yearly basis!

Hope it helps :thumleft:

Its not even lighting up so I'm hoping its just an electrical problem but not sure where to start looking.

Hi there!

It does sound very much like an electrical fault with the switch itself so would be worth taking the climate control unit out and checking the switch, that said I'd make sure you check all your fuses first of course! I'm not sure what fuses there are on an MR2 for the air conditioning, most likely one for fans and another for the A/C. (Mines always worked perfectly, touch wood!)

If you do get the switch working and the compressor is still not engaging, first check the wiring to the compressor is all connected and not shorting anywhere, if that's all alright then find the pressure switch and short out the two wires that go into it, if the compressor then engages, you have a failed pressure switch, if it does not then chances are the thermostat had failed, at that point I bid you good luck getting that out of the dash :oldtongue:

Of course all of that assumes there is gas in the system and when checking make sure you at least have the ignition turned on and the fans/A/C running!
