Bit of a funny one, we have made a little strut brace for the mk1, however the only one I have in at the moment is a 1.5. I need someone to bring there ideally standard mk1 in and see if our brace clears the engine? I'm sure it does but can't be too sure!
There's not a lot on the market, and these are made to look like a toyota part so won't look out of place. I suppose powder coating could be an option too.
We're based in Hertfordshire and if you like it you can keep it for half price.
Either call, or PM Me or Ollie@pacificworks
Cheers!
Luke

It's just a bit of flattened round bar Peter lol
Seeing that I'll make my own

Yes, suitable length of 20mm steel (or alloy) tube, flatten the ends & drill
That should make something similar to Luke's creation Alex
I've never seen a brace with less than two fastenings at each end though
The T-bar front brace uses a much bigger dia tube too (around 50mm IIRC)

Re: Needed: mk1 owner as a guinea pig to test fit a part!
Needs more attachment points and a method of pre-tensioning works better for me, or making like a Mk2 X brace, a single bar with one attachment point will possibly just pivot on the bolt it is on. I don't think the flattened part will have much compression strength if i'm honest, unless it changes to a X brace design like a Mk2 perhaps.
My version... rose joints, opposite threaded bar for preloading in situ.
Please note, i'm not currently making these due to my workload.

Beat me to it Paul.
All structural bolted connections are a minimum of 2 bolts for precisely the reasons Paul has stated.

I have an aftermarket on on my one, solid bar but held by two bolts too. also has a nifty little 2" long narrow bar off to one end to clip the engine lid support bar to when its not in use, so it doesn't rattle around.
Mine also clears the standard airbox etc. Not clear if yours does.
