Mounting a bucket seat, how?

Post by Tsporter »

I have a sparco sprint seat that I used for trackdays in my mk2. I was able to just bolt that directly onto the bottom rail of an old mk2 seat and it bolted straight in.

Now I would like to use it for trackdays in my mk1 SC. How have the rest of you done it? I'd like to keep cost down and not invest a lot of cash in sparco rails, etc...

I've got 2 sets of rails for my OMP seat (bolts on the underside).

One is simply a steel frame with the old rail feet welded to it, it's an utter PITA to get into the car as the clearances are next to nothing but it sits nice and low in the car.

T'other one is a stock set of rails with a cross bars welded on to mount the seat. Not so good with a lid on but will be put in so the MoT tester can reach the pedals.

Using stock rails you'll struggle to get it low enough. I tried this, pulled it all out and went for fixed Sparco alloy mounts in the end.

And pics of it on the stock rail which I welded a side mount too. Note the height difference:

And with the alloy mount that was floor mounted:

Think the sidemounts were about £50 so not expensive.

I've got base mount seats bolted to universal sliders (which you don't necessarily need but I share the car with the wife so I need the adjustment) then I've then got the sliders bolted to custom brackets that use the standard mounting points. Nice and low, adjustable, comfortable and no modification to the car required.

Not as easy as the mk2 so. I do need the height as I'm 6'3, so it looks like that rules out standard rails. I'll see what can be made up, but I want to keep it as a bolt-in bolt-out job, I don't want to go welding bars in. I'm not a fan of bucket seats on the road, it's a pain crawling out of the car at petrol stations, etc!

I have this bottom fixing seat, mounted on strong but simple fabricated brackets, connected to the original mounting holes at the front

The rear of the seat is down to floor level & bolted through the floor

So absolutely a low as possible for that type of seat
