[Mk2] [Turbo] Replacing exhaust manifold gasket

Post by chrishewett »

Can anyone tell me what sort of job replacing the exhaust manifold gasket is on a rev 3 turbo?
I bet it's not much fun!

It will take you between two and four hours and I'd recommend an extra pair of hands. Removing the x-brace is a must in my opinion although I know of people who've done it with the x-brace in situ.

You can remove the turbo and exhaust manifold in one piece but others prefer to remove the turbo first, then the exhaust manifold. If you go down the latter route, you'll need to replace the exhaust manifold to turbo gasket as well. You can skimp and reuse it as it's a metal gasket but why would you?

Lastly you'll probably lose oil and/or coolant so put something down to catch it. However, if you're quick you can plug up the pipes as you remove them.
