Thermostat problems (MK2 Rev3 Turbo)

Post by static »

Recently my car has stopped getting up to temperature. Symptoms are that even after a prolonged drive on the motorway the temperature gauge doesn't go above 1/4 full scale (normally sits at 1/2). When I stop the car and turn off the engine, then come back to it a few minutes later and start it up the gauge is at 1/2.

I suspect that the thermostat is stuck fully open. Unfortunatly I've got no time and need the car for work (we're completing a product and I'm working every day all day for the next month). Now the manual seems to suggest that the thermostat has a 'pin' which is exposed outside the thermostat - I figure that if I can reach this and give it a light tap it might loosen it? Can't see where the thermostat is located (I think it's under the ECU and dash temperature sensors somewhere), otherwise I'd have given this a go anyway!

Hi:

The engine thermostat is fully encased within a housing attached to the cylinder head. Are you sure you are not mistaking the engine thermostat with the cabin-heater thermostatic regulator?

Thanks for the response - if it's fully encased it looks like I'll need to drain the coolant to check it out.

I wasn't mistaking this for the cabin-heater thermostat (at least I think I'm not), but the diagrams on the manual are a little vague - so I was unsure if the valve had a protusion I could check out (as per CO-14 4(c) in manual online at MR2-Tech.com).
