It's my time, sticky front brake calliper

I don't think I've done too bad over my 2 Mk 2s / 4 yrs of combined MR2 ownership, but yesterday as I walked round the side of my car I could feel the heat radiating front the passenger side front wheel

So, my question is....is it worth me spending a bit of time trying to free up the piston(s) [any tips welcome] or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new calliper? I don't mine trying to free up the calliper, but I'm not happy talking on a full rebuild of the calliper myself.

Have others had any success freeing the pistons up & lubing the necessary parts?

Buy one on eBay,then send your old one back for 15 pounds back. That's the easiest way I think

i had this exact issue, on same wheel on one of my rev5's.

freed it all off and refurbed caliper, was good for a week....ended up buying new caliper job done

Ye, between mine and my dad's MR2 I think We've replaced 5 calipers over the last 2 years

When they start to stick, no matter what we've tried you always end up buying a "new" refurbished caliper, and order is restored

If you go to your local motor factors, with your old caliper. You should be able to get a refurbished OEM caliper. That's what i did for both front for mine. I think it cost roughly £60 each with your old one as an exchange. You may aswell bite the bullet!

They should be classed as consumables on MR2s

A caliper rebuild isn't a hard job you just have to take your time and make sure everything is clean, I did all 4 calipers on mine over a year ago and they are perfect still.
The kits are about £30 for two calipers and the only other thing you want is some red rubber grease

+1 and probably thousands more would agree, I expect.

The eBay ones do the job and have a 2 year/24k warranty so peace of mind and come in at about £100 by the time you've paid the return postage. Do it straight away and save your disks and pads from getting worse and your fuel economy. No messing around and as Wilkie says, they're pretty much consumables.

I've just forked out for some Wilwood 4 pot with s/s pistons, so hopefully no more maintenance issues in the future.

I have a full set of calipers I bought from Sbits only about 5k miles ago, car always garaged, not driven in rain and hey are in perfect condition, they are in the for sale section if you want to have a look.

I assume that these are the ones that people have mentioned, seems a pretty good deal to me.

My next question is fitment.....no issues with the physical swap over of the caliper itself, but I'm assuming that I will then need to bleed the brakes as the brake line will have been disconnected (or is it possible to clamp the line temporarily?) Hummmm, might need to be a garage job, any advice gratefully received. Anyone know of a 'how to' for front brake calliper swap?

I did my caliper a couple of months ago. Did not need to bleed the brakes as I clamped the line.

Been in for an MOT since and the brakes were spot on.

Cheers for the info folks! I'll pick up a new caliper and get my local garage to fit it I think so the brakes can be bled correctly
