How long is a while?

Might seem a strange question but it's relevant to the diagnosis.

That's not really long enough for fuel to go off and block injectors (v common on Mk1s that have stood years) , at a guess i'd think your fuel pump has maybe seized, but that is just a best guess, it really needs further diagnosis.

hi paul
thanks for reply.
was starting to wonder about fuel pump as i thought i should here it whir before starting nothing happens at all .
.
the fuel is quiet old though to be honest but it was running fine when last run no spluttering and when she first failed to start it gave a couple of burbles and the stopped .
not burbled since so fuel starvation seems likely.
question is then is it better to get a mrT pump (if available ] or what is a good aftermarket one?

many thanks again

bridge the B+ and Fp terminals in the diagnsis box, strip the center console cover, undo the fuel pump connector and measure whether there's voltage present after turning the key into ACC position. If there's voltage, you can also test the pump in situ (ie save the hassle of dropping the bomb... eh, tank). terminals still bridged, undo some banjo bolt (filter or at the fuel rail, or een both to see whether the filter is clogged) but be sure not to squirt too much gas into your engine bay (some sort of container might be handy) and have someone turn the key to ACC momentarily just to see whether the juice is flowing. after that, you can tell if it's pump or something in electrics (fuse? relay? a bad wire? or ground?) or even something completely different :D
