[Mk2] [Turbo] What causes Puddle of oil in spark plugs???

Post by joemacmr2 »

Pulled spark plug leads out and spark plugs saturated in oil. What causes this? Leaking rocker cover gasket? Is it an easy fix?

Yes, rocker cover gasket - time consuming fix but doable - I think there was a thread with pics on the MR2OC but I can't find it.

when you say time consuming, what are we talking, approx 3 hrs??

is it just a matter of removing throttle body/cable, intercooler hose, remove rocker cover, replace both gaskets and bolt everything back on?

Seems handy enough

any tips i should be aware of to make things go smoothly?

hour or 2 at best if you havent done it before inclulding clean up time.

just be sure to not tighten the cam cover bolts too much as can easily crack the cover!

definatly a diy job.

Before replacing gasket make sure all of the screws are tight if not tighten them then remove the oil puddle and see if still leaks.

If its still got the philips head screws replace them with allen bolts they are easier to tighten.

If it still leaks its an 1hrs job to swap the rocker cover gaskets. you will also need some gasket sealent for the corners.

There was a fair amount of oil around rocker cover when I bought it. I degreased engine and it hasn't leaked fresh oil in a few weeks. It was only when I popped the spark plug leads out (still stamped 1992), there was a puddle of oil in every spark plug. I'm gobsmacked how it hasn't misfired yet especially with 21 year old leads lol

Should I bite bullet and renew leads, plugs dizzy and rotor even if it starts and runs fine.

I've heard guys says they renewed a of above even when it wasn't misfiring and couldn't believe difference in performance
