[Mk2] [Turbo] reading a e.c.u

bit confused engine light is on, bridged te1 and e1 turn the key to acc (dash lights are on) but the engine management light stays off any ideas

I'm sure I had to start my car before I could check it for fault codes. Have you tried it with the car running?

nope but will guessing turn car on run then bridge the terminals?

I did it the other way around, I bridged the terminals and then started the car.

You do not start the engine, you turn the key to the second click, which should enable you to read any stored codes.

If you start the engine, it will run in static timing mode and not show fault codes

dosent show either way on second click or running

your not bridging it properly then.
even with no codes it should still flash constantly.

try a paperclip or thick wire

Turn the key to the ACC stage (ie. on, but don't start the engine) BEFORE bridging the terminals. Bridging the terminals first, as you're doing, puts the ECU into test mode AFAIK

Does the engine management light illuminate when you switch the ignition on at all ?

What ecu have you got - stock or aftermarket ?

managment light only comes on when the car is running and i belive its stock e.c.u only had the car a few months

The management light should illuminate permanently with the ignition on, and go off when the engine starts.

If that isn't happening, then you have a wiring fault somewhere bud, and I'd suggest fixing that before proceeding

I'd start by double checking you have a standard ECU

I really wouldn't know to be honest. I've got a similar problem myself at the moment, and cannot seem to figure it out
