More problems with misfiring

Post by Nick Bryant »

Driving down the motorway, absolutely blast the boobs out of it and flying, lift off then boot it again and massive amounts of misfiring, coughing and spluttering and not really getting anywhere, lift off, floor it again and still the same, lift off, and boot it again and everythings back to normal and im flying again,What the f@~# is going on,Its beginning to do my head in a bit.
Anybody got any ideas/solutions!

mine does this but the more i drive it the better it becomes untill it doesn't do it at all, but we are taking fast driving for 20 minutes or so to get it behaving (after waiting the 5 mins for temp to get up). I have new leads, dizzy cap & rotor arm :(

That is exactly the problem especially when i first start it ill leave it running ten minutes to get upto temp then drive it,it misfires for a bit but as i boot it more and more it dies out and runs fine especially when its rainind itll take longer. You say you got a new rotor arm and dizzy does it still do it?

Take the car somewhere really dark one evening, and with the engine runing lift the engine lid.

If you see any blue sparkles (they may be dim) then replace the HT Leads. The HT leads may have a year of manufacture on them - anthing older than about 5-8 years could probably do with replacing.

All the symptoms people mention here (bad running when the engine is cold) TBH sound like HT problems - check you dizzy cap, rotor arm and HT leads.

If the insde of the dizzy cap has lots of white deposits on the cap, scrape them off - of the metal contact underneath is seriously concave, replace the cap.

I'm running a GP for copper contact dizzy caps that stop this problem - if you're interested in joining it you can (just!) - email me direct at [email protected] to join.

My mates MK2 had a similar problem, wouldn't rev when it got warm, changed the ignitor unit and the coil and it is fine now.
