I was thinking about this as an option to get my mk1 closer to being back on the road....
Given all the panels come off and there are some nice flatish surfaces i was thinking i might give it a go... not thinking carbon but possibly an interesting gloss type finish.
Any thoughts?
All the surfaces need to be flat and rust / corrosion free.
Probably best to do it in an ambient temperature / environment.
You need a heat gun and patience.
A chap on the mk3 page did his bonnet with carbon fibre type vinyl / wrap, looked awesome but time consuming and it's not cheap.
well the car is rust free and pretty much ready for paint so was just looking at the options..
Although just found this as an option.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4NUjVh3zTA
lots of vids about it.
seems to be something that is catching on....
This seems to be the main place to learn about it... https://www.dipyourcar.com/home.php

Hmm yes that is interesting Sam
Am I correct in thinking it's not available outside the USA though ?
Wrap is a pain to do unless you get the 3m expensive type. I've wrapped a few panels on a mk1 with carbon and it was bubble free but I think it would certainly take time and a lot of effort wraping a whole car.
Yeah but then it's really easy to redo and I have watched other vids and read reviews, it continues to set once applied and is actually very robust to impacts so unless it was a particularly sharp impact I think it would be ok.
Actually would protect the paint, people are using clear on areas that are susceptible to wear from road use.
The colour choices are not really getting me excited though...
yep, thats not a bad option. I think nik over on TB did a decent job on his car with some of that stuff.
I still like the idea of the plastidip though.
Going to see if i can keep my eye out for bargains over the next few months and keep looking at colour options but at the moment i like matt black or some kind of burnt orange / bronze
I looked at the water transfer stuff a couple of years ago before it took off like it has now, and found it more of a ballache than it was worth. Every single possibility had to be spot on to work or else you had to start again. In the end, it cost me too much, bored me of doing things over and over, and i thought the finished article looked alot better in real carbon anyway.

here in Slovakia, a wrap is half the price of a decent whole body paint job (labour is cheap ). the best one could probably do is to protect a good paint job with either clear or same colour wrap. wrap prevents minor stone chips and stuff and can be easily peeled off.
pk_090 wrote:As i said though Finn it is a major ballache doing it.
the water transfer thing definitly looks like a ballache but plastidip is something completely different and too be honest couldn't look much more easy to do.You barely have to prep the car and masking is minimal.
Paint wise though it is not cheap stuff, 5 litres is about £90, and i think i would probably need to get at least 7.5 litres.
my concern with that would be what happens when you get a chip say on the bonnet. If it tears the plastic slightly and you continue driving surely the tear will get bigger and bigger until well., your bonnet shows paint from before under.
