[Mk2] [Turbo] Replacing Inner Tie Rods - Power steering fluid leak!

Post by Chumbaside »

Hi,

As subject really, I am rebuilding the front of my MR2 with new brake discs, pads and callipers and thought I would refresh the inner tie rods and track rod ends too.

I removed the OS inner tie rod without issue, but as I turned the steering wheel to give me better access to the NS I noticed PS fluid leaking out the boot. Once I had removed the tie rod I could see that PS fluid was running out through the centre of the rack where the inner tie rod threads in.

This doesn't seem right to me, but I've not done this before! Should the PS fluid be able to find it's way out of the rack like this? I had no problems with the rack prior to removing the OS tie rod and the BGB isn't very specific about the power steering rack when disassembling.

Any help or advice much appreciated :thumleft:

Is it likely to be a seal or something similar? Seems a shame to simply replace what was a perfectly good rack before I started messing around...

Anyone rebuilt a power steering rack? Any advice really appreciated!

So for those who like to say I told you so...

I sourced a seal kit for my rack, duly stripped it down, cleaned it and fitted new seals (which took 2-3 hours). Re-fitted, complete with new boots, inner tie rods and poly bushes - well pleased!

...until I put the liquid gold Toyota fluid in and turned the ignition on. All was ok until I turned the wheel at which point £15 worth of Toyota's finest spewed over my garage floor #-o

The moral of the story? Listen to advice and save yourself a ton of time!

(needless to say second-hand rack is winging it's way to me courtesy of TCB :thumleft: )
