Long term storage >1 year

Post by meggs88 »

Hi I am looking for some advice on things to do to get the mr2 ready for over a year in the garage.

I was thinking handbrake off, axle stands, battery out.

I won't be able to start the car for over a year as I will be going abroad.

Any help much appreciated.

Mine has been in my garage for about 8months now and wont be back on the road till next summer. All Ive done is remove the battery, leave the handbrake off and leave in gear.

mine spends 6 months minimum stored, as said really. i move mine from time to time so dont take battery out just d.c. chock rear wheel and leave handbrake off

if it was year plus id prob take wheels off and leave it on axle stands

Is this to stop flat spots on the tyres? not actually experienced this myself but I usually roll mine out every 3-4 weeks to to wash it because it gets dusty.

I've left many cars standing for long periods of time up to a year. I just disconnect the battery and make sure the tyres are pumped up. Oh, and leave the handbrake off of course.

+1

Either pump tyres to 40psi, or put up on axle stands.

Id drain the fuel and coolant personally, then disconnect the battery and put up on axel stands with the handbrake off :thumleft:

.....never heard of draining the coolant before, but I guess a cooland change afterwards is a good idea.

4th time I've tried to answer this and it's dissapeared LoL...

Put it in with minimal fuel -most places I know insist on an almost empty tank (makes sense).

Jack it up if you can, though I had a set of Toyos sat for about 8 months with no ill effects before. If possible get them to push the cars around. Saves flat spots on the tyres. I used to use a moisture trap frm BnQ inside also.

all my tyres need replacing anyway so im not jacking mine

i wouldnt drain fuel if its 6 months - it doesnt break down that fast - esp in a sealed tank

Don't drain the fuel system dry. Seals and O rings can dry out. Takes 18 months plus for octane rating to reduce. Leave 1/4 of a tank and fill up to the brim on return.

yep, mine went in 2 week ago with 1/4 tank - mainly so enough to turn over and run during winter

Just reminded me, my petrol will be 2years old when i get it running next year. How do i go about draining the petrol on a rev2 turbo?

Undo fuel line. Get bucket handy and short out B+ and FP in diagnostic port. If only small amount start up, check all ok, and go fill up.

I would avoid draining the coolent since it has corrosion inhibitors in it. Make sure the coolent is in good order and leave it in there topped up.

More chance of it rusting if you drain it I am sure. You will let air in but the coolent will never be fully dried out.
