HKS Cams

Post by SuperRedMR2 »

I've found some HKS cams in the USA

254 intake and 264 exhaust - will these work with a standard ecu?

They'll work.

But you won't realise the true gains without being able to modifiy fuelling and ignition advance.

Did you just advance the timing Lauren?

That wasn't the cause of your engine dying was it?

I don't think the cam timing was the issue.

It ran too hot really.

Have a look at Vashy's cam timing thread. I set mine to the same as him. He does have an SAFC though and made 142bhp.

I disagree, running too hot would have given you the same troubles (or at least showing signs of it) across all four cylinders and not just isolated (twice) to one cylinder in particular.

My money is still on fuelling for that cylinder alone.

I think the point Peter is making is that while the cams will work (the word work infers the engine will run), you won't be making the most of them on stock fuelling/ignition maps.

Forgive my naivety, would an ecu be required for the fuelling and ignition?

Yes, something like a Megasquirt standalone or a piggyback such as the Greddy you mentioned above I think Alex

Or just use an SAFC as Vashy did.

There was evidence on my engine that it was running hot on all four to be fair. Number 4 is the weakest link as we know. Fueling could still be an issue though.

I'm using other injectors now, just in case.

Have you had them cleaned and balanced?

HKS cams

Post by aw11rally »

I fitted HKS 264s to my otherwise standard (but very low mileage) mk1. With standard ignition and cam timing it ran (and still runs, although not mine) well, I'd guess there is no significant power increase but what I loved was the power delivery.

Unlike standard mk1s with the HKS cams it really does pull strongly right up to the limiter, intact the limiter is a bit too low with the 264s.

At some point I'll pursuade Cogboy (my mk1s current owner) to try Vashys cam positioning, I'm sure it would release even more fun.
