mk1 engine lid wont shut.

Post by branny crashed turbo »

ok, i havent investigated into this too much, mainly cos im lazy and its cold outside.
my engine lid wont lock down, it just springs back up, would this happen if the cable for it wasnt connected or tight???
the release handle is slack.

im thinking maybe i should buy a new locking unit bit, it seems to bolt on pretty easily.

anybody had this problem???????

sounds like the mechanism has stuck or the spring has come adrift or come off totally...ive got a spare here if you need it FOC.

i can move the mechanism by prodding it, the spring is giving good resistance, it just doesnt seem to want to lock down. :(

you think an entire locking assembly will sort it then?

if you've got one, ill have it off ya, ill pay though, youve sorted me with freebies before

Try undoing the nuts that hold the mechanism to the body. Then you will see you can lift up the catch mechanism a little then do the nuts up and try that.

It could well be that its a bit loose and has worked its way down, so now it won't shut.

could just be that the cable has stuck and needs freeing off.....trying soaking the whole mechanism in wd40 or oil overnight...make sure the cable hasnt snapped too and that the spring is in place....if you find you need something the part is here,no charge.

What you may also want to try are the little black "bump stops" on the engine lid itself, these are in the top left and right hand outter corners, if you turn them round they screw in & out of the lid allowing you to get rid of annoying rattles and places where the lid has dipped in a certain corner, if these are undone too much this will allow the lid to spring up and you will find it hard to close, just screw them back in & see if this does the trick, good luck, Jinxy
