Water Leak - Where is it coming from

Post by sbk1972 »

Hi all

IVe got a Rev 4, and when I open the boot, remove the trim on the right hand side ( where the aerial is ), the bottom of the wing under the aerial is full of water.

I originally though it may be from the aerial, but sealed that up around the hole in the wing / unit. I thought it may be from the rear lights, but no wettness around there at all. I noticed that there is some square panel section in the botton of the panel, maybe used for ventation, so wondering if its that.

So, anyone else have a leak in the rear wing panel ??

I had this in mine. I think it may have been from a hole in the engine bay fire wall to the boot that was missing a grommet but had a wire for the alarm and rear fog light going thro it. A bit of gaffer tape sorted it.

Not long after doing that i also removed the wing piece of the spoiler that the aeriel goes thro, to do some painting and sealed the bolt holes with RTV when i refitted so in theory it could have been that.

Hi there,

Thanks for the reply. Mine is a Rev4, so doesnt have the spoiler bolted to the wing. I just have a hole for the aerial to go through. This is all tight and sealed, so will look at the engine bay now.

Isn't there a drain pipe coming from the bottom of the aerial assembly inside the boot that is routed out through a hole in the boot floor? Or am I making this up?

Moo, your right, there is and this has its own hole which its poked through.

The amount of water currently in the rear wing area is quite large, so somewhere a substantial amount of water is getting in. If it was from the aerial then I would expect a little water, but not to the depth / amount Im getting.

I hate water leaks. :-(

Is the drain pipe from the aerial spilt? The hole the pipe goes through in the floor should have a grommet in it.

If not either of the above it will either be leaking in from the boot seal rubber, from where the spoiler bolts onto the boot lid or from a hole in the boot floor or bulk head that's missing a grommet. Mine used to fill up in the other corner and that turned out to be from a grommetless hole in the middle of the boot bulkhead. I guess the water was sloshing around in the boot floor and finding it's way to the sides when going around corners.

The amount of water in your boot might not be indicative of a massive ingress, it's more likely to be a little that's accumulated over a long period of time. Assuming you haven't checked it for a while that is.

Best thing to do is mop out all the water, ensure you have no holes that are missing grommets then get a hose pipe on the back of the car and see if you can trace where it's coming in from :thumleft:

My rev 4 is suffering with the same issue currently, and seems to be collecting in exactly the same location as described, although by the sounds of it in a smaller quantity. So far I think I have eliminated the boot seal itself, and the aeriel as neither of them show any signs of ingress.

I guess I shall be rocking the carpetless boot look for a bit longer until I can find the problem :-k
