Oil Leak

Post by ToyotaTosh »

Would someone be able to help me figure this out. Its coming from above the undertray, in front of the oil filter.

Possible candidates are lower sump to upper sump, upper sump to block, turbo drain hose at bottom of drain pipe.

See how high up the front of the block and the sump the oil deposits are.

I'm going to get under it now and have a look. Would it have anything to do with the recent clutch change?

Scratch that, its raining :(

Although I have just checked the oil level and there is too much in there, so I guess it'll be spurting out everywhere...

Looks like its coming from the turbo area. I've checked the oil level again, and it has seemed to level out, so maybe its only the excess that has escaped as no more leaks have appeared on the floor....

Fingers crossed its ok :thumleft:

That looks like the underside of the inlet manifold. In which case, 3 well-known possibilities:

1) Rear of cam cover gasket
2) Distributor shaft O ring
3) Bottom of catch can oil drain hose (Rev3+)

From what I can see, there is a slight crack on the inlet manifold.

On the possibilities you have listed, are they difficult to tackle?

I'll also PM you about the plug I asked about, I just havent got 2 mins to myself at the minute.

Very, very unlikely. Have never seen a cracked inlet manifold.

1) Not too tricky if you have a basic tool set.
2) Can be tricky aligning distributor drive dog with camshaft, but easy if done at same time as (1)
3) Easy to check - if a bit of a pain to get at.

As Peter mentioned, the rocker cover is a common source of leaks.
Due to the angle of the engine, the oil has a tendency to run towards the rear and onto the inlet manifold, before spreading to any number of strange places (partly due to the aerodynamics).
Does the sill around the back of the rocker cover have oil around it?
As can seep slowly so you may barely notice it on the dipstick but, after time, it makes a nice mess of your car and driveway!
The manifolds are fairly robust, although exhaust wrap has been known to cause issues on occasion
