[Mk2] [NA] Seized brake caliper?

Post by James-UK »

After a good drive on Dartmoor, my car began to shudder quite badly as I began braking for traffic lights up ahead. Got home and the right drivers side wheel / caliper was scorching hot, compared to the others that were just warm. Just having my face next to it was hotter than my oven on full blast.

The car isn't shuddering or vibrating normally so I can't see it being warped disks.

Is there anything I can try to sort it without taking the caliper apart? Or would I just be best dropping it off at Toyota tomorrow and let them take it off and have a proper look at it?

common problem with the brakes, either a piston has seized in the caliper or the slider pins have seized. If you know what you are doing you can fix it yourself and save a fortune. If the brakes are bad then a reconn'd caliper is a better ie longer term fix.

Is there any guides about? I've got limited mechanical experience so i'm not sure how much I'd be able to do. Just found a receipt and it seems the caliper was sticking last year, and Toyota took it apart, cleaned the pads / sliders and freed a piston for £45.

What kind of price we looking at from Toyota if it needs replacing?

It's a very simple procedure to DIY, unless you're really unsure in which case leave brakes to the professionals.

It's most likely the sliders. In which case it's just a matter of jacking up the car, removing the wheel, then it's just the 2 bolts on the ends of the sliders (the ones you have to remove to change brake pads) - once removed just re-grease with a suitable lubricant (I use a high temperature LM grease).

If it's sticking pistons then personally I'd go with refurbished calipers.
Toyota sell a seal kit which is around £50 per axle, and the pistons are around £10 each.

sounds like you are into caliper change time. Once these things go bad it means stripping them every year to fix them. You can buy as suggested a kit and do it yourself but by the time you factor in all the faffing about, just buy a recon unit and swap the whole thing over in no time at all. You should certainly as JohnnyC suggests do the sliders but I thought it was a bit more involved including taking the carriers off.

As said, if in doubt get someone else to do it, messing with your brakes is not something to be recommended but plenty of info on here, check out the knowledge base articles http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/kb.php?mode=article&k=144 mk1 but the brakes are the same idea front and rear.

If you don't feel up to the job yourself, find yourself a reputed independent garage. No point in paying £70 or £80 per hour.

Will phone around a few places tomorrow. Don't have the tools to attempt anything myself so I'll just get it done properly for piece of mind. Sadly there's no MR2 specialist in Plymouth. :(

This place doesn't look too bad though. http://www.enginetuner.co.uk/home.htm

Cheers for the help guys. :thumleft:

Just picked the car back up. Piston was sticking like it did last year. Should last a couple of thousands miles though, then I'll look at replacing it. :)
