Front bearing removal

Post by Polypedates »

Hi,

Does anyone know how to remove this part of the front wheel bearing from the axle stub? There's no way of getting a puller onto it and it's stuck fast.

Apologies for the rubbish picture, this is the bit that needs to come off:

I've already tried heat and a hammer but it doesn't want to budge. I'm reluctant to try cutting it off lest I damage the axle itself.

Thanks

We had a smallish pro two point puller which had sharp plate thingys that could get a grip on the edge of the bearing inner race. We put slight pull on it and heated g-e-n-t-l-y the inner race while turning the puller at the same time. Torch had a small flame and it only took a second of heat to loosen the race - I kid you not.

Another method could be by welding nuts or something similar on the inner race on opposite sides to have grip points for puller + slight heat.

I've done them in the past by grinding through with an angry grinder until you see the metal blueing (generally about 0.5mm thick), then chucking it in a bucket of cold water. Take it very slowly! The race generally cracks down the middle of the thin material, leaving the hub unharmed.

Your friendly local garage will have hydraulic press

They'll be able to tackle that for you :thumleft:

Hmm I was using a press to get the rest of it off but you can't use it for this as there is nothing to press against.

What type of puller do I need, the link doesn't work? I have a standard 2-3 jaw puller but it can't get a grip on the race. Is it one of those made up of 2 crescent chaped lugs kinda like this:

I had to do the same when I changed the rear bearings on Cassi's Mk2, my local garage used a cutting disk and cold chisel to get the remnants of the old bearing off. Seemed a bit brutal to me. :-k

I've seen it done by cutting about 3/4 of the way through it then applying a single blow with a hammer/chisel to crack the rest. Once the tension is out of it it should fall off.
