Cam belt change

Post by VGB »

Hello,
I'm looking at getting a rev 5 and it seems as though there are no records of the cam belt being changed.
I was looking for recomendations of somewhere to get it done. I live in South West Norfolk bordering Cambridgeshire and suffolk. I don't mind travelling but don't want to go a long way out of the way with poss very old cam belt on.
What would be a fair price for a cambelt change, if anyone has had one done recently?
Lastly I may be able to get the garage to do it where I'd be getting the car. What are your thoughts on non Mr2 specialist garages working on your car? Am I just being over cautious wanting it to be done by a garage I know will know their stuff?
Cheers in advance. :)

The 3SGE is a free running motor, non inteference engine, so even if the cambelt snapped, you wouldnt normally damage the pistons and valves.

Rogue motorsport has a fixed price deal on their website, dunno how near they are to you though.

You say that but I wouldn't trust the non interference ness of it all i've heard differing things from people who have actually had it snap.

No, not at all. Many garage will simply look at the car, see it's mid engined, suck air across their teeth like a dodgy plumber and say "that's gonna cost you".

Book it in with SBits, Rogue, Pacific Works, Woodsport or 3S and pay a fair price for a decent job carried out by people who know the car inside out.

Try Luke at Pacific Works in Hertfordshire. He charges £160 labour for a cambelt change, very reasonable.

When I first bought mine I had all the belts and water pump changed at a local garage. They xxxxx it right up, after two attempts the timing was still wrong and the belt kept running off and rubbing, I took it to 3s to fix as I just wanted a working car.

My advice, take it to someone that knows what they're doing and will get it right the first time round. It cost me a lot of money for that mistake.

Wow. Just wow. It is amazing there are people that still try and charge real money when they are just monkeys. right hand jockeys like that should be sweeping the streets.

My father and I dropped the motor on my car last November and did all the cambelt, waterpump, idlers, tensioner, a/c belt, alt belt, hfh and so on. Mint job first time round. Never done it before.

Yep, real garage. Went there on the recommendation of my girlfriends family, they've been going there for years and her dad said that they used to regularly service an mr2 so they knew what they were doing. I'm never going there again for sure.
