Dreaded insurance quote...

Post by munter »

So needing to get insurance sorted to pick the Supercharger up this week and get it MOT'd I thought I'd try a few places for quotes and my chin hit the floor.

Some background. I'm 38, male, clean license, no convictions, 6 years no claims on main car insurance, live in a nice area (according to the insurance guys lol!), will have the car on road but in our quiet cul de sac, planning on 5000 miles a year. I've gone through the three mods (stainless exhaust, new alloys and custom lip/splitter none of which should have any effect really)

First quote was Elephant. £605 Fully Comp / £575 3rd party (!!!)

Second was Adrian Flux £530 Fully Comp (discounted from over £700 if I join the MR2 drivers club)

These are double what I was expecting and are dampening my enthusiasm somewhat. I have a few more to try but looks like I'm facing an uphill battle to get this down to a reasonable price.

My other car is on Skoda insurance and they wont allow the import on as a second car. It looks like the 6 years no claims will need to stay with Skoda anyway.

Any ideas on this? Will be trying Sky , Dorset, Keith Michaels and Hertitage tomorrow but dont want to spend all day phoning round if I can help it!!

cheers
Paul

Unfortunately all insurances went up this year and will be doing for the foreseeable future.

I pay £440 fully comp, im 27, got 9yrs NCB, 3 points, 3 mods and I do 16000 miles a year...

But I looked around too and AF were the cheapest :( I personally hate them but that's who I had to go with.

Try Peter Best insurance as they deal with limited mileage policies or Brentacre

If you have a main car and this is going to be garaged/pampered etc you'll be able to get a classic/custom policy no problem. I used to be with Flux/A-plan and it was always around £800 which hurt a lot for the miles I did.

Even with no, no claims bonus on my MR2 (it's on my Yaris) The insurance for my completely unstandard Mk2 is £280 a year for a 3K miles a year policy. This is with Classicline, give them a shout :thumleft:

Those prices aren't far off what I'm paying for my V6 MK1.

Try A-Plan as well, they and Sky have done me proud for the last 3-4 years. :thumleft:

Just had renewal through for my mk1. Modified suspension, wheels, brakes, engine conversion with mappable ECU at about 260bhp, rollcage, bucket seats. Coming in at £370, up £40 on last year.

I'm 30, no ncb on this car, 5k mile limit and live in a very poor postcode area. That's with Adrian Flux so don't really understand your quotes.

Thanks for all this. Lee could it be just because mine is a supercharger and Japanese import? Bizarre as your car is way more powerful than mine!!

Hi Paul,

Get on an onlien quote from Footman James and maske sure you put you mobile number on. If you dont take out the policy they call you in a few days and were very competitive for me.

Quoted me £185 for 3K per anum on a classic policy on a supercharger plus 10% off for being a club member

Was paying last year £150 on an SC with 3.000 miles a year at market value. Recently restored the car and went to £4750 agreed value... which required another £35 a year. Classic policy with Chaucer in the Mark 1 Club scheme. Absolute delight to deal with. Contact Marianne at Houghtons Brokers on 01582 867763. Been using them since 1996 on a variety of Mark 1's. You need to be a member of the Mark 1 Club which costs £25 a year. No problem as long as your over 25.

Thanks donna thats a good tip - only the online form only allows for non-imports (no SC listed) and for cars that will be garaged.

I filled it in and got £273 for a standard MK1 on 4500 miles a year so lets see what they come up with. If they can do that for the SC I'll be happy!

Thanks

Footman James for me. Seem to come up with the best quotes and have the most knowledge, especially when talking about modifications.

Sometimes phoning around is a false economy unless you save a great deal by doing it. You can spend loads on your phone bill by ringing companies for half an hour trying to explain things like what vernier pulleys are and if they affect horsepower.

This topic makes me sick.
21 y.o male 1 yea NCB with 0 points or convictions paying £1200. i went with sky as they were the cheapest, and the allowed me to declare exhaust and induction filter at no added cost. Hopefully in the next few weeks the car will be back on the road with the buckets and harnesses fitted, so will see how much the price goes up when they are declared.
Flux quoted me 3500 and direct line (who i was told were good) were in excess of 10k!

Alex I was paying £1300 on a triumph acclaim when I was 18, so count yourself lucky!
