[Mk2] [Turbo] Oil temp sensor location - not sandwich plate or sump

Post by shinny »

I'll soon be fitting a thermostatic sandwich plate with takeoffs for an oil cooler, but this means I need to ditch my sandwich plate with my Defi sensors in. I already have the adaptor for the oil pressure sensor (to go in place of the standard sensor) but need a location for the oil temperature.

The reason I don't want the sensor in the sump is I'd like a vaguely comparable reading after fitting the oil cooler. I'm aware the temperature in the sump is up to 10C lower than that seen in a sandwich plate, so if I move sensor location at the same time as I fit the cooler I'll never know what affect the cooler has had.

Where else could I fit an oil temperature sensor on a rev3 3s-gte that is post filter so I can compare old and new figures?

there are 3 pluged and threaded holes right next to the oil filter, my rev3 lump has HKS oil temp and oil pressure sensors there.

2nd engine picture, you can just see one of them poking out from the oil filter housing...cylindrical protrusion plugged with an allen key stud.

Thanks Dave, that's perfect. Do you know what adapter I need to fit the sensors in those holes? :thumleft:

I'm really not sure...looks like M16, one of the adapters says "AN" on it but there isn't any other info on the other one I'm afraid matey. ](*,)

That looks spot on, thanks :thumleft:

At that point in the system, I think I'd get away with removing the plugs without dropping much oil, right? In which case I can take a punt on the thread size and try it out prior to the oil / sandwich plate change.

Same thing but without delivery charges: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/280809320181

I'll buy one and, if it fits, buy the second one I need later... job done! Thanks Dave :thumleft:

Dan and I figure it's a 1/4BSP thread, as the Toyota engines of that age tend to use British standard threads. Therefore I've ordered one of these and I'll let you know if it fits: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/280794047158

It's not...

The 1/4BSP adaptor (with 1/8NPT plug fitted) on the left and the plug that came out of the car on the right. Excuse the truely awful camera phone photo, my car was slowly dripping oil with the plug out so I wasn't hanging around for a photography masterclass:

Any ideas what the thread is, given the comparison?

A little bump to post a diagram of where these plugs are:

A couple of 3/8 BSP to 1/8 NPT adaptors plus a little PTFE tape will allow you to plumb in oil temperature and pressure sensors and get readings directly comparable to a sandwich plate, without lowering the filter into the undertray or any of the hassle of dodgy sandwich plate seals.

^^ copy and paste link - I can't get this ancient forum software to understand the brackets are part of the URL #-o

AFAIK this is rev3 turbo only.. it's certainly not on the rev2 turbo.

Not creating a new topic, I will ask here.

What is the best place to put oil temp sensor in rev1 turbo? I was planning to fit it in sandwitch plate, but I've read that it's not a good location because of exhaust manifold.

Thank you for advices!

Weld an adaptor in the sump.

What's wrong with a sump plug adaptor for the temperature?

As an aside, oil pressure can be taken from a T-Piece (and braided line) from the stock oil pressure sensor location. Don't mount the T-piece directly in that location, they tend to brake due to the extra weight on them - the braided hose to mount it remotely is key.

Those locations won't give comparable results to a sandwich, but just want to understand what your car does normally and then spot any changes :thumleft:

Simply longterm reliabilty. Both capilleries and wires don't like being disturbed, so given the choice, i'd weld an adaptor in the sump in preference to a sump plug adaptor. Otherwise, no difference between the two.
