Rear tyres - 255 or 235?

Hi,
I have a set of 17x9 rims on the back, what tyre size are people running?

235/40 R17
245/35 R17 - hard to get tyres in this profile
255/40 R17

I am trying to decide between 235 or 255 - any bad points with running 255 on the back?

Any picies?

tbh mate... i am running 265/45/17 rears and 245/4517 fronts... it seems to stick extremely well... they are a straight fit and require no messing or spacers etc to clear the shocks etc...

255/40/17 on a 9J 35 offset will foul the arches over minor bumps. Ditto 245.

If you want a fat tyre, get those arches rolled/pulled

I'd stick with a 255/40 and get the arches done personally.

I am not mad into fat tyres, i was going to go with 235/40s but then after reading some boards i see alot of ppl had wider.

My offset on the rear is 45mm, so tucked in by 10mm, i will have to see what it looks like before deciding if i need a spacer.

So 245/40 and 255/40 foul arches, does 245/35 foul arches too?

I'd be tempted with 10mm hub centric spacers with extended studs on the rear bringing the offset to +35 coupled with 255/40/17 tyres and get the arches rolled. Sits perfectly flush. Depends how far you want to go though I guess.

255 doesnt look fat on a 9J, its the "right" size IMO. Gives your rims some protection from curbing too.

IMO you may wanna space out by 5mm.

With a -30mm spring 235/40-17 won't rub the arch with a 17x9j 35 et wheel,245/40-17 will rub on bumps, arches will need rolling.

235/40-17 and the speedo will be like standard,245/40-17 and the speedo will be spot on up to 80 and then it may under read (but the rozzers may have got you anyway).

235/35-17 and speedo will over read and revs will be higher at say 70,and the arch gap will be bigger.

With 9" wide ET45 you might well get away with running the 245/40 or 255/40 without rubbing (especially if you are not lowered) as you are slightly inside the arch anyway. But as all tyres are slightly different widths depending on brand the only way to know for sure is to try it - if you are rubbing it's not difficult to roll your arch lip up and out of the way with an arch roller.

If you have a modified turbo I'd probably go with 245/40 or 255/40 for the extra grip. If running N/A you don't really need the extra width so it'd be personal preference.

I wouldn't be too concerned re: maintaining stock rolling radius if it's only for the sake of the speedo as even the 255/40 will only make a difference of 3 to 4 mph. You could plug your satnav in and see what speed you are really at when the speedo reads 30mph or 70mph and just remember it for later. More than likely your speedo will read spot on or slightly more than you are travelling at even with the larger tyres
