Guys

Just a discussion about what manifold set up u guys are running?

I know here in Irl all the ae86 fellas are big into their stainless manifolds etc.

Has anyone any experiece with them on an aw11 and if so what are yer opinions?

All opinions welcome - Good/bad!

I would go as far to say that hardly anyone has a non-standard manifold on their MR2. Most however do fit stainless steel exhaust systems, invariably of the Magnex/Mongoose type.

I know on AE86's it's the other way round, but I would say there is a bigger global market for AE86 goodies.

I had a Trust/GReddy mild steel tubular manifold on my Mk1, coupled to a mongoose system. I'm not sure if it did much for the power as I didn't have the car Dyno'd while it was on the car, the butt dyno didn't tell me much either. :lol:

I have noticed this alright. Its funny how different cars with the same engines have different modification styles.

I suppose its a "Looks" thing on the ae86 since people can see the manifold and it makes for nice astethics.

Also the MR2 4A-GE manifold is quite an efficient design I think

Had a £500 quote to have a performance manifold made

Not sure its the best use of my 500 :?

May be interested in a SC manifold because it has a drilling & studs for an oxy. sensor

Forgive my ignorance Peter, but how do you exploit that? Needing a replacement ecu?

Handy if you're going for an aftermarket ECU such as Megasquirt. :thumleft:

We've got a custom (Richard Macer / RMS / RM sport I think) 4-2-1 in mild on the rally car (mild is the better material for manifolds, more resistant to thermal cracking, unless you can afford inconel that is).

I've never tried a standard manifold on the same engine so couldn't compare scientifically. BUT if SC engines can push close to 200bhp on standard kit I doubt you need to change your manifold unless you're building a 160bhp+ NA engine.

I have got figures for our manifold against a formula Atlantic manifold on the same engine. Although the dyno's and gearbox etc were different the results were very similar. 167bhp(rear wheels) with ours, 198bhp(flywheel) with the formula Atlantic manifold.

I've had a few quotes for a copy of our manifold and they all come in at about £600 for the first one (a jig needs fabricating) then less for any additional copies required.

I have a Megasquirt ECU Cecil

Havn't got it working yet, but hopefully soon

It can use an oxy sensor

I looked at a stainless manifold and was quoted £500 + VAT - the materials don't even come to £100 so a bit of a rip off really.

I keep toying with the idea of getting one made at work but what with my own engine problems and being flat out at work I just haven't got round to it.

Expensive yes but I wouldn't say it was a rip off. If I was making manifolds for a living I'd be wanting a couple of hundred quid profit for a days work. A lot of hours would go into scratch building then tig welding a manifold. Just the two flanges would take a good bit of time on a milling machine.
